The chuck or tool holder is always situated at 90° to the tool body, which allows the height of the chuck and gearbox area to be as short as possible. Although drilling at a right angle to the tool body has always been seen as a solution to an access problem, some modern tools utilise the short distance from the tip of the chuck to the back of the gearbox in order to improve control and safety of the tool, essential when using large-diameter auger bits and wood boring bits.
