Compressors
Air compressors are tanks that use a motor or engine to take in atmospheric air and store it under compression until it is required to power tools, spray guns and other equipment. When choosing your compressor it is essential that it has the capacity to power the tools you intend to run off it.
Two figures are often quoted on compressor specifications and they are CFM (Cubic Feet per Minute) displacement and CFM FAD (Free Air Delivery). CFM displacement only refers to the amount of air the compressors pump is capable of drawing into the compressor and should not be used to determine whether the compressor will run a particular tool. CFM Free Air Delivery states the volume of air the compressor will actually discharge, which is typically a third less than the CFM displacement value, offering a more realistic measurement of whether the compressor is suitable or not.
Certain types of air tools such as sanders and grinders demand large volumes of air and require large capacity compressors. Air nailers and staplers consume much less air due to the small bursts used in the firing process and are suitable for use with compact, portable compressors. Although unthinkable years ago, cordless compressors are now available which are ideal for powering fine gauge air nailers and staple guns offering an alternative to gas powered machines.
Protrade sell compressors from Makita, Metabo, Milwaukee and Draper.
