Linear Sanders
If you need to sand architraves, cornice or hand rails, hand sanding is often the only way to do it. Trying to replicate this sanding action using a power tool necessitates the use of a linear sander. Linear or in-line sanders do not oscillate or orbit, they simply go forwards and backwards – in a straight line. This sanding action sounds crude but it does in fact have huge benefits when sanding workpieces that feature a moulding or groove.
The tiny orbits and oscillations that take place thousands of times a minute on traditional sanders, cause the abrasive and backing pad to collide with the raised and dipped profiles present on the workpiece, making the sanding operation impossible and destroying the sharp edges of the moulding. Linear sanders on the other hand, follow the profile in a very simple back and forth motion; this speeds up the sanding process, reduces effort and protects the shape of the workpiece. Users may find that they have to get creative and make their own pads; these kits often come supplied with the machines although V shaped and half round pads are available as standard.
Festool linear sanders are available from Protrade.
