Gas Nailers
The very first cordless Gas Nailer was developed in 1986 by Paslode; a tool manufacturer that took its name from the acronym Packing Shipping Loading Devices. The Paslode Impulse gas nail gun was groundbreaking technology at the time, as it did not require an air compressor.
Instead, these gas nailers used what Paslode called a “fuel cell”… a small metal can be filled with pressurised, flammable gas. There was also a battery pack and a high-voltage power supply to deliver a spark. The design resembled a small two-stroke engine. The technology has evolved over the years, but the basis remains unchanged.
The tools have a combustion chamber and when the contact tip is pushed onto a piece of work, fuel is squirted into the chamber from the fuel cell and a spark plug ignites the fuel charge, pushing the piston which drives the nail. A small amount of combustion gas is then briefly stored in a side chamber, which is used to push the piston back into the ready position after the nail is driven.
The original Paslode gas powered nail guns were designed for driving nails and staples into wood and timber products, but the technology was extended to a Spit Impulse or Pulsa range of gas nailing machines, capable of firing nails into much harder substrates such as steel and concrete. With both the Paslode and Spit brand names being owned by ITW construction products, this clever and innovative gas powered nailing technology was patented, but when the patent ran out in 2010, other competitor brands launched their own versions.
Since then, Paslode and Spit have raised the bar even higher with some new patented innovations, improving both performance and reliability. Although there are a handful of reputable alternative models available today, the original Paslode and Spit cordless gas nailers, available and stocked at Protrade, are still the best!
