First aid equipment is a legal requirement for all businesses so immediate assistance is on hand should a colleague be taken ill or is injured at work. A suitable aid kit is a good place to start and there are different size kits on offer. Many factors will determine the size of the kit and how many are required; this should be determined by the health and safety officer or competent person risk assessment. Considerations of the size and number of kits can be: the number of employees, the environment the employees are working in – for example an office would present less chance of personal injury than an engineering workshop or construction site and the size and number of floors of the office, site or manufacturing facility. Aid equipment must be visible and stored correctly. You may choose to make up your first aid kit after your risk assessment or purchase a ready-made one from a reputable manufacturer.
