Transformers
Portable, step down power tool transformers are easily spotted as yellow boxes dotted around workshops and construction sites converting mains 240v supply to 110v. Transformers are available in different sizes which also often determines the number of outlet sockets present and the capacity of them, 16 Amp and 32 Amp being available.
Although transformers commonly quote their KVA rating in literature this illustrates intermittent values. Virtually all power tools are used intermittently with power only being required when the trigger is pulled, often in bursts to perform a short cutting or drilling task. When connecting equipment such as site lighting it is common that it is left on for long periods which can result in the continuous capacity of the transformer being quickly overloaded causing irreparable damage. When choosing a transformer, it is important that the equipment’s wattage and nature of use is considered in relation to the intermittent and continuous ratings of the transformer; if two or more tools are connected simultaneously the overall combined wattage must be taken into account.
