Tool boxes made from tough plastics are more common in the construction industry, as they can be big without being heavy, and different compartments within the box are easy to manufacture with modern moulding processes. The rounded edges of plastic are also less likely to damage seat material, wooden floors, and other surfaces prone to marking.

Rear wheels and extendable pull handles are extremely popular as they allow the toolbox to be moved around the workshop or site with ease; the empty toolbox may be manufactured to be lightweight, but when filled with tools, it can become an immovable object, so any design that allows easy transport is useful.
