Rotabroach
As the inventors of the annular hole cutting system in the early 1970’s, Rotabroach has become the generic name for broaching cutters and magnetic broaching machines. The annular cutter Doug Houghen invented was designed to remove just the outer edge of the hole leaving a slug of metal to be ejected in the middle. By avoiding the need to remove the entirety of the material in order to create the hole, the drilling process was four times faster than existing drills. The massive reduction in power and torque required to make the hole, also allowed much lighter and compact magnetic drill stands to be used, thus turning a two person operation into a job for one.
Over three decades, annular hole cutters have developed by using higher grade materials such as high speed steel and adapting cutting geometries and tooth shapes. More recently, Tungsten Carbide Tipped broaching cutters have become more popular due to their vastly improved cutting speed and service life – even on hard materials and stainless steel.
Rotabroach, now part of the OSL group, has been a supply partner of Protrade for many years. As an early adopter of the annular hole cutting concept, Protrade continue to supply Rotabroach HSS cutters, carbide TCT annular hole cutters and magnetic broaching machines.
