Resin Fixings
Resin fixings or chemical anchors offer a very reliable and strong anchoring solution in concrete and masonry, particularly where working close to and edge and limited fixing spacing is unavoidable, as would be the case if a small steel base plate needed to be installed. Resin anchors work by bonding the fixing into the base material, unlike a mechanical expansion anchor which expands within the hole. It is this bonding system which works along the whole length of the fixing, that provides no stress on the base material upon installation, allowing for fixings to be placed closer to edges and one another. It is important to remember that stress will most definitely be applied to the base material once a load is applied, so minimum distances and base material thicknesses will still need to be factored in.
Resin fixings tend to come in two formats, glass capsule and cartridge (sometimes foil) systems. Glass capsules contain the resin, aggregate and catalyst in a perfectly measured dose to suit a specific hole size and depth; the ingredients are typically mixed together by the fixing bolt smashing the glass and being spun at high speed using a drill adaptor, mixing the ingredients together. This method is capable of very high loads in concrete but is unsuitable where there may be voids in the material for the ingredients to leak into.
Cartridge systems are the most popular installation method used nowadays, mixing the resin and catalyst in a special coaxial nozzle which delivers a perfectly blended resin mix into the hole. The ability to pump more resin into the hole allows for voids within the base material and cartridges are not fixing size specific making for a flexible, on site solution. Different types of resin are available depending on the application. Popular formulations include polyester for internal, low strength applications, vinylester which is for medium loads internally and externally and pure epoxys which offer the highest performance available.
