Shovels
A shovel may seem like a basic tool but it’s been at the heart of agriculture and construction since Roman times. Shovels are designed to scoop, lift and toss material efficiently, and although we may take the design for granted, there has been considerable research to determine the angle and load capacity of the blade, the handle length and shape of the grip, in order to maximise work output and minimise fatigue. Shovels consist of a blade, socket and handle.
For durability a solid forged design is best as it sees the blade and socket (which the handle goes into) forged from one piece of material increasing rigidity and leverage, it does however, increase weight. A pressed steel blade shovel can share the same shape and dimensions as a solid forged one but is constructed from a metal sheet that is stamped by machine, the socket is made using the same sheet which is shaped to wrap around the handle; cheaper to manufacture and not so hard wearing they do have an advantage of being lighter weight helping to reduce operator fatigue.
Blade shapes vary to suit the task in hand, with square mouth designs being able to carry the most material, tapered mouths better for getting into corners and cable laying designs being narrow in width with a slight dish to be more efficient in clay and more compacted soils.
