Diamond core bits are manufactured from a cylindrical steel core and circular steel backplate with a series of diamond impregnated segments which are attached to the drilling end, usually by laser welding or brazing. The diamond cores work in conjunction with a high torque, hand held drill or fixed diamond drilling rig. For drilling in softer brick and blockwork, dry cut diamond cores can be used successfully, although dust extraction is highly recommended to speed up the drilling process, reduce wear to the segment and making removal of the masonry slug from inside the core easier; most importantly, dust extraction greatly reduces the operator being exposed to harmful silica dust present in many masonry substrates. Diamond cores are capable of drilling very hard stone, concrete and even reinforced concrete when used with suitable diamond rings and a water coolant system that floods the core with water, this cools the segments and flushes out dust and masonry debri caused by the grinding action of the diamond segments. Deep holes can be made using long reach cores and extension bars.
