SDS Plus Drilling
The SDS plus drilling system is nearly 5 decades old and has been adopted worldwide, proving that it is a worthy invention that has stood the test of time. Regularly contested but widely accepted as meaning, Slotted Drive System, in literal terms the German translation of ‘Steck – Dreh – Sitz’, Plug in – twist – retain, accurately describes how the drill bit is located in the drill chuck. The slots on the drill bit shank allow the drill bit to be thrust forward by the hammering action of the drill, while ball bearings locate in two further indentations on the drill shank to prevent the drill bit from coming out of the chuck.
The SDS plus drilling system, allows only the drill bit to move back and forward within the chuck, maximising the impact of the anvil striking the back of it. Compared to an impact percussion drill which moves the entire chuck mechanism back and forward, SDS Plus drilling is a much faster and more efficient drilling method that does not require excessive force to be placed behind the machine.
SDS plus drill bits feature a Tungsten carbide drilling tip which relies on the point breaking up the base material in order for the waste material to be carried away by the helix. The most popular tip formations use a 2 cutter carbide tip but 3 and 4 cutter tips are available which are designed to prolong drill bit life, especially if rebar is present; they also drill a rounder hole which is preferable for secure anchor installation.
Multiple cutter tips can slow drilling speed and use more battery energy on cordless tools because of the increased drag of the multiple tips. The PGM mark found on some SDS drill bits is a seal of approval which guarantees the drill bit diameter and geometry which prevents oversized holes being drilled possibly causing anchors to fail.
Protrade stock SDS plus drill bits in diameters 4mm – 30mm and lengths up to 1 mtr.
