Mortise Chisels & Bits
A mortise and tenon joint is a traditional method of connecting timber and is used extensively in window, door and furniture manufacturing. It can be cut by hand but this is a skilled and laborious task so a much faster method is to use a bench mortiser. Mortisers are able to cut a square hole using a mortise chisel and bit. The bit is very similar to an auger bit and sits inside the square, hollow mortice chisel. As the round bit removes nearly all of the timber the sharp edges of the chisel are left to remove just the corners of the hole leaving a square edged mortice which is ready to accept the tenon.
Protrade stock the Draper Expert range of mortice chisels which use a standard 13/16 shank and fit most mortising machines.
