Planer Blades
A sharp and effective planer blade is one of the key critical tools for any joiner. Static power planers are often used to plane larger and structural timbers to a required dimension whilst also achieving a smooth clean finish. Portable or handheld power planers are frequently used to make items fit as they are being installed.
A great example would be planing a door or window in order to prevent these items from catching on the frame. Once the type of machine required has been determined the most important accessory is the planer blade. Regardless of the machine type or size of the motor, it is, of course, the planer blade that has the last say on how good the finish of the planed timber will be.
The material of the planer blade is important as this affects how fine the grind of the planer blade can be. HSS or high-speed steel planer blades are capable of being ground at much lower acute angles which allows a much smoother and refined finish.
However, HSS planer blades are prone to become dull and lose their sharp edge much faster than their TCT, Tungsten Carbide Tipped alternatives which is why HSS power planer blades are best suited to softwood timbers. TCT planer blades are often found on portable planers and offer the longest working life across a wide range of natural and man-made materials. Many portable TCT planer blades are double-sided and once they become dull or chipped they have simply turned around and re-inserted back into the machine making them very economical.
There are some unique designs of planer blades which manufacturers have designed in order to achieve the best finish possible. Festool is one such company who insert their single blade into the planer blade block at an angle which is believed to cause a slicing action rather than a chopping one helping to achieve a perfect finish with no other processing required.
Before you use your power planer it is good to practise to check the condition of the blade fitted as you will only find out that it was blunt or damaged after you have made your first pass. If you need to replace your planer blades Protrade will be able to meet your requirements.
Order your planer blade before 5pm and it will be despatched that day ready for you to use the next working day. Or, click and collect from your local depot in Derby, Nottingham, Chesterfield, Mansfield or Burton.
