Sander & Polisher Accessories
It doesn’t matter whether you are sanding or polishing, what you are ultimately trying to achieve is a surface finish; that could be to provide a key for future coatings, or achieve a high lustre shine on solid surface materials, plastics and paints. The sanding or polishing machine is the power source which provides the rapid movement to the accessory but it is the sander & polisher accessories that allow abrasives to be mounted and polishing compounds to be applied.
If you are sanding, a harder backing pad can dramatically improve stock removal and give more stability when sanding edges, this also helps to prevent rounding over of the edge profile. Softer backing pads can be more delicate and are often preferred for sanding in between coats, they are also more conformable when sanding up stands. Interface pads can be useful to provide extra cushioning and conformability as well as protecting the original backing pad from hook delamination when using velcro fastening systems.
Care should be taken when choosing your backing pad to ensure extraction holes match the abrasive and therefore maximise dust removal, although in some cases, backing pads without holes are preferred to help reduce tearing, particularly when sanding metals. Polishers also require a backing pad so sanding sponges, waffle pads, felt pads and fleece materials can be attached; depending on the polishing stage these pads can be used to apply, blend or buff polishing compounds and creams.
