Effortless breathing and continuous cool air are just two of the benefits of a powered respirator, also known as a PAPR – Powered Air Purifying Respirator. Powered respirators work by connecting a battery powered motor to a fan, which draws air through a suitable filter and delivers it via a breathing tube and facepiece to the wearer. Most designs use a belt or rear harness to mount the battery and motor which makes them comfortable to wear and unobtrusive in the working environment.
The PAPR concept works on positive pressure; simply put, there is more pressure inside the facepiece than out, so any contaminants present in the air are pushed away by the continuous airflow and denied entry into the helmet or face shield. As a powered respirator does not seal to the face, a face fit test is not required, making them particularly suitable for wearers with beards and facial hair.
The cool flow of air also reduces perspiration and prevents fogging inside the helmet or face shield. Although the initial cost of powered respirators is higher than some other types of respiratory protective equipment, their long working life and low cost consumable parts, make them very cost effective. The comfort and ease of use associated with Powered Air Purifying Respirators, also makes them very appealing.
