Wood Repair
Repairing wood is not an uncommon procedure, indeed, the fact it is relatively easy to repair is one of the advantages of using timber as a construction or furniture material. Larger Repairs can involve splicing, bracing and replacement whereas minor repairs involving cracks, holes and splits may simply involve the use of fillers. Wood fillers can normally be categorised as single part which do not need mixing with another component or 2 part which use special synthetic filling materials and a hardener or catalyst which allows the filler to set.
Single component fillers are very easy to manipulate and apply, so they lend themselves to small repairs such as pinholes, grain filling and hairline cracks; due to their formulation they are normally easier to sand but are less durable , especially in external applications.
Two part fillers are very strong, stable and slump resistant making them more suitable for larger internal and external repairs such as knot filling, shakes and rot repair.
Wood repair fillers can be neutral in colour for overpainting or contain coloured pigments in order to represent the species of wood they are to fill. Special formulations of wood fillers are manufactured to readily accept stains and lacquers; they are made with more porous raw materials, which easily absorb these surface treatments allowing the filler to blend in more naturally with the surrounding area.
Unique products such as Bonda Supersoft are available in light and dark base colours and are perfect for wood stains, lacquers and overpainting whilst being very easy to sand and shape with cutting tools. Fillers typically need sanding after their application and achieving a blended, level finish can be difficult if the filler is much harder than the host timber. It is inevitable that the area surrounding the filler will also be in contact with the abrasive, so a filler which sands at a similar rate to the wood will help to prevent filled areas that stand proud.
Many wood repair fillers will also adhere to masonry and can provide a durable solution for filling cracks in plaster and making good around light switches and sockets. When choosing wood filler for your application the volume of the pack is more important than the weight. Products like Bonda Supersoft weigh significantly less than other standard fillers sharing the same size tin, this is due to their porous, lighter weight formulations.
Other aesthetic repairs on wood can be undertaken using skilfully colour matched hard and soft waxes. These sticks are perfect for scuffed edges and surface scratches and when applied correctly can make imperfections disappear.
