Drills & SDS Hammers
If you’re looking for quality drills & SDS hammers, we’ve got you covered. Since the invention of the first portable electric drill in 1895 by the Fein company, modern drilling machines have become smaller, lighter and much more capable. The machine Fein launched over 100 years ago weighed in at a whopping 16.5lb; a drilling machine of similar weight today, would get you a metal broaching machine complete with a hefty magnet, capable of drilling 30mm holes in structural steel.
Rotary drills and angle drills are designed to make holes in many different materials using a plain rotary action. When drilling wood, metal and plastics the drilling accessory will have sharp edges or teeth which cut away the substrate in order to make the hole.
Broaching machines use special annular hole cutters that only cut the outside edge of the hole, leaving a slug behind. This drilling technique dramatically reduces the amount of material that needs to be removed, significantly reducing drilling time. Broaching machines can only used on metal. Usually, when drilling in masonry, the rotation of the drill bit is accompanied by an impact percussion or hammer action, which enables the drills point to be used like a chisel to break up the base material, the helix (which has no cutting features) then carts the dust and stone chips away to the surface. This hammer drilling system is used in SDS plus, SDS Max rotary hammers and impact percussion machines.
Diamond core drills are the best machines for drilling large holes in masonry. Diamond drills use diamond tipped cores which, like annular hole cutters, only cut the outside edge of the hole, resulting in a masonry core being left behind once the hole is completed. Using a plain rotary action, diamond drilling machines produce very clean holes in concrete, brick and block. Due to the high torque motors on diamond drills some machines cannot be used free hand and will need to be mounted in a stand, they may also require a water coolant system.
