Diamond Drills

When using diamond core bits,  it’s important to use a dedicated diamond core drill due to the powerful motors and  high torque gearboxes That’s because machines are equipped with powerful motors which are capable of turning heavy, large diameter diamond cores. Due to the twisting forces hand held diamond drills can generate, a side handle and safety clutch or torque limiting device is essential to protect the user from injury should the diamond core snag in the material.

Hand held diamond drills almost always come with a heavy duty geared chuck which allows the power tool accessory to be tightened securely in the chuck and just as important, removed from the chuck as some high torque applications can cause a keyless chucked to become locked around an accessory shank proving very difficult to remove. Diamond drills usually perform the diamond drilling task in a plain rotary action but some machines also have an impact or percussion mode, this is not for use when drilling with the core but applied when drilling the initial pilot hole in the masonry.

One exception is the Milwaukee machine, which operates a very faint impact action during the core drilling process. Larger capacity diamond drilling machines cannot be used handheld and need to be mounted in a purpose made drill stand which uses a rack and pinion type gearing to advance the core through the material, the stand itself is anchored or held in place using a vacuum system. Used for wet drilling, stand mounted diamond drilling rigs are capable of drilling very large holes in concrete and other hard masonry materials.
