Routers & Trimmers
The first powered router was manufactured in 1915 although the plunge router we are more familiar with these days was believed to have been manufactured in Germany back in 1949. Routers and their smaller counterpart the trimmer are an incredibly versatile machine and are typically associated with woodworking and cabinet making.
Plunge routers are typically available in 1/2″ and 1/4″ collet versions and can perform cutting, trimming, shaping and boring tasks. They are capable of working to precise dimensions utilising fine adjustment gauges present on the machine and when used with a quality router cutter, they are renowned for producing a very clean finish which does not require further processing.
Some routers will also have a variable speed motor enabling the user to reduce the RPM of the tool which can be critical for large diameter cutters and materials which can be affected by heat, such as acrylics and some plastics.
Trimmers, or bottle routers as they are sometimes known, can also perform the same tasks as a router but on a much smaller scale as they are usually equipped with lower-powered motors. As the name would suggest, a trimmer spends much of its time using a bearing guided cutter to trim back overhangs of laminate or veneer leaving a smooth and consistent finish on the edge of the board. Due to their small size, they are often preferred for small routing tasks such as applying shallow rebates and making cut-outs for hinges in conjunction with a hinge jig. By nature of their design routers and trimmers create a lot of dust and should be connected to suitable dust extraction wherever possible.
A router and laminate trimmer need to be robust whilst remaining accurate which is why Protrade selects from brands such as Festool, Makita and Lamello. If you are determined not to compromise on your next router purchase why not consider our finance option? It allows you to take immediate delivery of your preferred machine and defer the payment with no interest or extra charges.
