MILWAUKEE HISTORY

Milwaukee Tool’s heritage dates back to 1918, when A.H. Peterson developed the groundbreaking Hole‑Shooter, the first lightweight, one‑handed industrial drill designed at the request of Henry Ford – founder of the Ford Motor Company. Following a factory fire, Albert F. Siebert acquired the remaining assets and in 1924, the Milwaukee Electric Tool Corporation was born, setting the foundation for a brand focused on durability and innovation.
Throughout the 1930’s and 1940’s, Milwaukee strengthened its reputation by producing high‑standard tools for the U.S. Navy, expanding into grinders, sanders, and electric hammers. A major milestone came in 1951 with the launch of the iconic Sawzall, a reciprocating saw that remains central to the brand today.
Over the decades, Milwaukee continued to evolve, and more recently they developed leading cordless platforms like M12, M18 and MX Fuel, cementing their status as a global innovator in professional power tools.

Frequently Asked Questions
Milwaukee power tools are a must-have if you prioritise durability, performance, and a comprehensive cordless system. Here are some of their strengths:
- Durability and Reliability: Milwaukee has a reputation for building tools that can withstand tough jobsites and heavy use. They’re a favourite among professional tradespeople for this reason.
- Performance: Milwaukee cordless tools are known for their power and capability. Whether it’s drilling through tough materials or driving long screws, their tools are built to handle demanding tasks.
- Cordless Systems: Milwaukee offers two main cordless battery platforms (M12 and M18) with a wide range of compatible tools. This allows you to invest in batteries and use them across a variety of tools, saving money in the long run.
Ultimately, the best way to decide is to research specific tools you need and read reviews to see how Milwaukee stacks up against the competition.
There are a few differences between M18 and M12 tools, however, one of the key differences lies within the Power and Performance of the tools, for example:
- Milwaukee M18 tools are the more powerful platform. M18 tools are ideal for heavy-duty applications, driving larger screws, drilling tougher materials, and handling high-torque tasks.
- M12 offers a good balance between power and portability. These tools are well-suited for lighter tasks like furniture assembly, cabinetry work, and everyday DIY projects.
Size and Weight:
- M18: M18 tools are generally bigger and heavier due to their more powerful motors and larger batteries. This can be a disadvantage for tight spaces or overhead work.
- M12: Much lighter and more compact than M18 tools, M12 excels in situations where manoeuvrability and ease of use are crucial. Their smaller size allows for better control and handling in confined areas.
Battery Life:
- M18: With larger batteries, M18 tools tend to have longer run times on a single charge. This is beneficial for extended projects or continuous use.
- M12: While the battery life may be shorter than M18, M12 batteries recharge faster due to their smaller size. Additionally, the lighter weight of the tools often translates to less fatigue and potentially more work accomplished within a single battery charge.
Applications:
- M18: Construction workers, mechanics, serious DIYers, and professionals who need heavy-duty power will find M18 most suitable.
- M12: Carpenters, electricians, hobbyists, and anyone who prioritizes portability and comfortable use in tight spaces will benefit from M12’s size and weight advantage.
There are a few differences between M18 and M18 FUEL tools, however, one of the key differences lies within the motors of the tools.
M18 tools typically use brushed motors. Brushed motors can sometimes be considered less powerful compared to brushless motors. M18 FUEL tools come equipped with brushless motors. Brushless motors rely on electronic controls instead of brushes, offering several advantages, including:
- More power and efficiency: Brushless motors generate more power and consume less battery, allowing you to work for longer durations.
- Durability: Without components that wear out like brushes, brushless motors generally last longer.
- Reduced heat: Brushless motors generate less heat, keeping the tool cooler and potentially extending its lifespan.
- Better control: Brushless motors may provide more precise speed control for certain tasks.
Here’s a breakdown of some additional factors to consider:
RedLink Plus Technology: M18 FUEL tools often integrate Milwaukee’s RedLink Plus technology. This system uses advanced communication between batteries and tools to provide features like overload protection, extended tool life, and optimized performance.
M18 High Output Batteries: While both M18 and M18 FUEL tools work with regular M18 batteries, M18 FUEL tools can leverage the extra power of M18 High Output batteries more effectively.
In essence, M18 FUEL represents Milwaukee’s higher-performance line within its M18 platform. If you prioritize affordability and light-duty tasks, M18 tools will suit you perfectly. But, for more demanding applications, M18 FUEL’s superior power, durability, and features may make it a better choice. Milwaukee now has over 200 power tools in their M18 or 18V range, with many tool types replicated to offer different levels of performance and capability to the user. Because of the volume of M18 tools available, it can be quite overwhelming when it comes to selecting the right tool. To help with this, we have put together an article to highlight the Top 10 Milwaukee 18V power tools and help guide you in choosing the best tools for the job.
Milwaukee ONE-KEY is a free-to-use cloud-based application that provides a digital eye on all your tool inventory and users, allowing you to pinpoint missing tools quickly. This enables you to monitor your tools on-site so you can see who was last using the tool and where it’s located, saving you time and any unwanted stress during the day. It can be used via Bluetooth connectivity on smartphones, computers, and iPads, allowing you to track anytime, anywhere.
With ONE-KEY, you can increase productivity and decrease downtime by assigning tools to specific people and places for added accountability at the project level. It is also fully customisable for each tool. For example, you can wirelessly sync your drills and impact drivers to program custom speed and torque settings directly; no longer must you personally oversee every tool whilst in use, simply check the settings via the app.
Milwaukee’s ONE-KEY technology is currently available in M18, and there are a small number of M12 tools. However, in the future, they will be expanding ONE-KEY across a larger range of tools.
Milwaukee ONE-KEY tools have built-in tracking allowing you to always monitor the location of your tools. The Milwaukee ONE-KEY app will show you when your tool was last in range of a mobile/smart device. There are numerous situations, such as being on a large work site, where this is useful as you’ll be able to quickly use your phone to locate a misplaced tool.
Yes, many Milwaukee ONE-KEY tools allow you to adjust torque. The ONE-KEY mobile app can also adjust other settings in the field, such as maximum speed, bolt removal speed, and trigger ramp up time.
